Wonton Soup

This wonton soup is full of flavor, easy to make, and you end up with a light soup which is flavored with ginger, enriched with bok choy and tasty wontons. It has been my go to soup for years and I think of it as Chinese penicillin when I have a cold.. The term wonton comes from a Chinese phrase meaning swallowing clouds.

Wonton soup with homemade wontons and pork-shrimp balls
Lately I have been needing wonton soup in my house. On a cold and rainy evening this soup will warm your belly. It will do the same on a foggy summer night. I have been playing with the recipe for years . The secret is in the tasty light broth that you want to slurp with delight. Of course a homemade broth is tastier but there is nothing wrong with using commercial chicken broth.

Wonton soup with store-bought wontons
Normally I have been making this soup with store-bought wontons that I keep in the freezer. It is an easy and light dinner that is ready in 20 minutes. But when I decided to post this recipe I had to make my own wontons. I found a recipe I liked  at  (click here for the video on how to make wontons). I modified the original recipe to make less wontons. I didn’t like the flavor of my wonton wrappers so I made mostly pork-shrimp balls. For all purposes you can make this soup with pork-shrimp balls  only. Whatever you do, I hope you enjoy it as much as my family has.

Krabbensuppe
In about a month I will be in Hamburg, a city in Northern Germany. I can’t wait, but in the meantime here is a recipe for Krabbensuppe, a  delicate pureed vegetable soup , topped with bay shrimp. This soup is a staple in that region served with a tasty local little shrimp called Krabben. (click here for the recipe)

I'm a huge fan of wonton soup, too, assuming they're the real deal wontons you describe here that really do live up to their fanciful name. (I'm less partial to the thick-skinned "wontons" you will often find here in the US.) I've never attempted to make wonton soup at home, though. It doesn't sound too terribly hard... worth a try?

The Krappensuppe also sound very nice, and not too difficult. Shrimp aside, it sounds very close to the various vellutate in Italian cuisine.

There are many different wonton recipes. I didn't like the wonton wrappers I purchased , I have to see what else I can find. I would love to try the Italian version of the Krabbensuppe.

Have always (well, as long as I can remember) loved and made wonton soup - in my part of the world it is a labour of love from scratch :) ! And you could not have given a better link in the world than that of Nagi's . . . what she does not know is not worth knowing !! With five million hits a month on her social media outlets she is more than appreciated a Japanese/Australian gal from Sydney's Northern Beaches. Well worth a subscription !!!!

It seems it has been foggy here for weeks. Wonton soup sounds good and I would buy them to make it - almost homemade! Enjoy your trip to the homeland!

There is nothing wrong with buying already made wontons. I have done it many times. The broth makes this dish.

Wonton soup is great! Love the stuff. One of those dishes I rarely make, though -- more something I order in restaurants for some reason. I should make it more often -- it's not at all hard, and that way I can spice it exactly as I like. Your recipe looks excellent -- thanks.

I always order sweet and sour soup when I go to a Chinese restaurant and I have never made it. Have a great week.

Perfect soup for the wintry weather we're having right now Gerlinde. The snow is coming down outside and I'm just at the start of a cold myself. Need to give your recipe a try!

I know what you mean about those Northern California summers. They're often more soup weather than winter. This is a good remedy in any season. GREG

Your right Greg, those foggy summer days are often colder than the winter days. Although this year it is different.

Gerlinde, your wonton soup looks delirious and nutritious. I admire you for making the wontons. We make Asian dumpling from time to time, so I can appreciate the effort. A great recipe, I can't see anything in it that doesn't work well for me. As for your Krappensuppe, perfect for any Swedish table. Have a safe and wonderful journey to your homeland.

The wontons were not all that difficult Ron. They did look a little juvenile. Do you have those little Krabben in Sweden? They are so delicious.

Yes we have krabba (crabs) here. They are not as nice as other crab I've enjoyed as the meat a bit stingy and most of the meat is in the claws. Usually you see just the claws at the fishmonger.

I loved learning where the word wonton comes from. Who knew!? :-) Sounds so delicious. I love a light broth like this with hearty ingredients like those wontons mixed in. One of my closest friends is originally from Hamburg, she has family there and visits often. Enjoy your travels.

Interesting! I never knew the meaning of wonton...but it makes perfect sense. I'm actually feeling like I'm coming down with the crud, and a bowl of soup might just do the trick. This sounds and looks delicious, Ger! I also want to try my hand at homemade wontons. Fun!

When I read ‘Krappensuppe’ I thought Eh? What’s a Krappe? And then I saw Krabben and felt reassured. I don’t know what the term in Hamburg might be. Anyway, have a lovely time in Germany. You are lucky to be able to do much travelling.

I'm making this recipe this weekend, but have a question: the picture shows carrots in the soup but there is no mention of them in the recipe. Carrots or no carrots?
