Thanksgiving  2018

How can it already be Thanksgiving again? Time flies by so fast, it's scary. During previous years, we often traveled. I remember the duck dinner in Prague and the beautiful week in Rome where we had pasta for Thanksgiving. This year we are going to our little cabin in the Sierra Mountains to celebrate with my sister-in-law and her family.  It's going to be low-key and relaxing, especially since my brother-in-law will barbecue the turkey and my nephew is a great cook.  For Christmas, I will have a full house since I will celebrate with my niece and nephew from Germany and my American family. I am always very happy when I get visitors from Germany because it's during the  holidays when I miss them the most.
When it comes to Thanksgiving, each family has their treasured recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. There is Aunt Mary's jello salad and the bean casserole from your grandmother.  And let's not forget sweet potato pie. Tell me, what are some of the recipes you make each year?  My family tradition is my red cabbage which is liked by everybody, so I will be making it again this year. Click here for the recipe.

Chestnut shiitake stuffing
Years ago, when I was a vegetarian, I would cook everything but the turkey. The centerpiece would be my stuffing served with mushroom gravy. I apologize for the poor quality of the photos, but they are all from previous Thanksgiving posts. I have been making this shiitake and chestnut stuffing as long as I can remember. Click here for the recipe.

If you are looking for a juicy small bird for Thanksgiving, check out my recipe for dry-brined turkey with silky gravy. I will be making this one for Christmas. Click here for the recipe.
Dry brined turkey
For me, sauces and condiments are just as important as the bird. My cranberry ketchup is a wonderful addition for the holidays and I make it every year. Here is a link to the recipe.
Cranberry Ketchup
For those of you who don't want to tackle a whole bird, I have a recipe for turkey parts. Here, I brine the parts overnight, which makes for  juicy and tasty turkey.  If you are interested, click here for the recipe.
Turkey parts in a hurry

Toasted, roasted, baked and done! I hope your Thanksgiving is lots of fun.
Oh, one thing, don't forget to give your compliments to the chef, and help with the dishes afterwards.
Wishing you all a relaxing Thanksgiving feast with good food, family and loved ones.  May your home be filled with laughter and happiness.

I know they're boring but I must have carrots. They are my number one thing at Thanksgiving. But also greens, and turkey. Of course. GREG

I don’t think carrots are boring Greg and I bet you have a special recipe for them.

What a fabulous plan for the holiday. Those low key relaxing holidays are always the best. Never had red cabbage for turkey day but your recipe sounds so delicious and love that pop of color for the table.

There are probably few families that will have red cabbage for Thanksgiving. Red cabbage reminds me of holiday meals in Germany,

We live in the south so corn pudding is a must on our holiday table. We're celebrating early this year so our children can celebrate with their spouse's families on the big day. So much easier than trying to have two Thanksgiving dinners! All your recipes looks wonderful - what a gorgeous bird!

The bird is good Tricia, I have made this recipe for many years. We celebrated Thanksgiving early last year and it was great . I have to look for the corn pudding recipe on your blog. It sounds delicious.

The older we get, the faster our Thanksgivings arrive. Maybe because each year we add on to our bountiful gratefulness, which gets fuller and fuller? You certainly have much to be grateful for, with Thanksgiving in the Sierras (sure hope the smoke doesn't reach there) and then the German visitors at your beautiful home for Christmas. Here in NE, we start every Thanksgiving by running or walking at a close-to-home Turkey Trot. One year we tried the 10K - in the snow. We changed locations and now enjoy a 5K, much better for an already-full day. ;--) This year we'll all go to my daughter's in-laws house, which makes me feel like that "over the mountain and through the woods to grandmother's house we go" song. They live in the middle of the woods next to one of NH's big mountains. There will be 11 of us; I'm told my "specialty" is my pumpkin pie, so that's what I'll be bringing. My sister-in-law's is her zucchini casserole. We'll have a regular roasted turkey, but my son-in-law also likes a turducken - have you had one of those? There's always left overs with that, because he's the only one who likes it. :--) Happy Glorious Thanksgiving to you.

I love the Turkey Trot , my husband always used go for a run on Thanksgiving morning. I bet you make a great pumpkin pie. Many years ago a friend of mine used to make a Turducken, that’s quite a production deboning the duck and the chicken. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family.

All your food looks sublime, Gerlinde. My childhood turkeys were always a meat and chestnut stuffing. I loved it and it was a meal in itself. I've made it, but, my family prefers bread stuffing and roasting the chestnuts and all the entails is just too much for just moi. :) Cold cranberry relish is must. This year, I am making the turkey and the younger generation are bringing the sides - abundance. I will have a crowd, so will also make a turkey breast. I'll check out your dry-brined receipt.

Gerlinde, your virtual food here is delicious as is the thought.
LOL, for me, writing before food. ;) I don't have family to cook for, so I can indulge myself that way.
My National Novel Writing Month (November) project is to "book-ize" (edit and format) the next 1920s story for Pip and Granny Phanny -- "A Ghost in the Kitchen". That's a suitable project for Thanksgiving. Have a beautiful holiday. Happy Thanksgiving.

Your Thanksgiving specialties look delicious! We have the usual turkey and cornbread dressing with gravy. For some reason I always make deviled eggs for every occasion. This year we are going to Freer to be with family so I will just be taking some dishes. The guys will be doing the turkey- fried? smoked? - so it will be a surprise. All the best this season of thanksgiving to you and your family! And thanks for the extra tips for cooking part of the turkey.

Cornbread dressing sounds good. I was suppose to make cornbread muffins with some school kids today but the whole thing got canceled do to bad air quality. I hope your guys will prepare a delicious turkey and you have time to relax and be with your family. I know it will be bittersweet with your sister gone. Hugs to you!

Wow, that is going to be a fun Christmas celebration with your German relatives in town. I know Germany is steeped in holiday traditions, so that would be fun to talk about the differences in cultures there. But turning to the food, that shiitake and chestnut stuffing sounds incredible! What a great combination of flavors, and it's perfect for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Chestnuts are such a unique ingredient!

Gerlinde, rotkohl mit apfel, right? I was taking a meal to a neighbor family years ago because the wife/mother was seriously ill, AND she was German so I wanted to make something German for her. I found this in an international cookbook and made it. She was so pleased. All your dishes look soooo good!

Happy Thanksgiving to you, too, Gerlinde! Thanksgiving dinner is mostly about the sides, I find. I always have a (small) bit of turkey, but it's the stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn casserole and the rest that make it special. I'd definitely go for that red cabbage, too, if it were on offer!

When I came to this country decades ago I was invited to a Thanksgiving feast . The lady of the house had made a Greek vegetable dish. She told me that I should add a dish from my country when I cook and that was how I started making red cabbage for Thanksgiving. My husband is not crazy about it but the rest of my family likes it.
