Six Days in New York

New York  to me is quintessentially American. It is a vibrant city with many different cultures, life styles, and a rhythm of its own. As far as I can tell, there is nothing like it on our planet. Some people call it the Big Apple or the City that Never Sleeps. It has many different names and means different things for different people. We all have seen movies that have shown us the city like King Kong climbing the Empire State Building. My very favorite movie is "When Harry Met Sally" and Meg Ryan is moaning in Katz’s Deli. My claim to fame is seeing Robert De Niro in the River Cafe under the Brooklyn Bridge 14 years ago.

I spent six beautiful days in New York, exploring the city. I ate, I walked and I ate again.  Find out  about my adventure on my Wanderlust blog, Click here .
Ruth Reichl, the former editor of Gourmet magazine and a native New Yorker, posted a recipe of the oyster stew served at the Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant in New York on her blog. We had lunch there on my last day in New York. Click here for the recipe.

It sounds like you had a lovely time, Gerlinde. I'm glad you got home before that awful stuff this weekend.

The weather was perfect and the tropical storm turned toward the ocean instead of New York. Hugs hug to you

Looks like a wonderful time in NYC, Gerlinde. You really capture its essence with your words.
I just finished reading Ruth Reichl's book about cooking saving her life after Gourmet Magazine's demise. Loved it.

Thank you Penny, you are so kind. I love that Ruth Reichl book and I have her "Gourmet Cookbook" that has over 60 years of Gourmet recipes in it. I use it a lot.

NYC is a wonderful city. I worked in Manhattan for a decade, and although the commute in and out of the city was long and hard, it was a pleasure working there. Just walking around the city you'd always see famous people. One of the neat things about the city, I discovered, is no matter how smart, beautiful, rich, whatever you are, the person standing next to you on the corner waiting for the light to turn green is probably more so. Thanks for the link to the Grand Central Oyster Bar stew -- I used to commute in and out of Grand Central, and have eaten there numerous times. Good place!

Yap, I agree there is always somebody prettier, richer or whatever . New York is really a fascinating place. My favorite thing at the "Grand Central Oyster Bar" is watching the oysters being chucked and the oyster stew being prepared.

Love New York! I love the eclectic melting pot. Always so much going on and yes because of that the traffic is not desirable but when you are on a holiday you have all of the time to enjoy all the sights, food and festivities.

I have never driven in New York and I don't know that I would want to. The subway works well for me. Thanks for commenting Bobbie.

Thanks Pam, I had a great time but I'm not as go-go as I used to be. I need a little rest in between.

Gerlinde - the Grand Central Oyster Bar has to be one of my favorite places on earth. So glad you went there! I like to make the oyster pan roast for Christmas!

David, have you ever watched them make that oyster stew? I have never seen a restaurant go through so many oysters.

What a culinary journey! Eating your way through the neighborhoods of New York. At least reading about it doesn't come with calories:)

Sometimes Virginia it is better to read about it than to do it.
