Paris and Apricot Bliss
Let me know if you have a favorite restaurant or place in Paris. I would love to hear from you. Cross your fingers and hope that hubby and I are over our colds before we leave.
Paris and Apricot BlissWhy the title? Because next week if everything goes well, my hubby and I will be in Paris. We will have our sentimental Paris moments sitting on a bench in the Tuileries Gardens. Which flowers are blooming at the end of June? We will discover our favorite places on foot, browse outdoor markets, observe life from an outdoor café and poke our noses into doorways to find hidden courtyards and gardens. We will visit some museums and I hope to discover new little restaurants, cafés, bakeries or anything that has to do with food. We will do what we had planned to do last year in April. But circumstances changed. Read my story here. Now to the apricots! Originally, I had planned to post some new recipes, but they needed more work before I can launch them into cyber space. But most of all, it is apricot season. I love apricots and I especially love apricot jam. I made my apricot jam this year with different apricots and it turned out fantastic. I love the flavor, so sweet and tangy! I think adding the apricot pits puts it over the top. I've been eating it by the spoonful. I was looking for Blenheim apricots, but they are just getting ready and are only available for a few weeks. This delicious German apricot coffee cake was one of my first posts. I made it again last week and it was well liked. The cake is easy to make, as it is light and fluffy .The apricots give it a nice fruity flavor and it looks great when you cut it into pieces. This cake will dazzle at any picnic or potluck. Adding a little piece of marzipan where the pit was just adds additional flavor. You can also substitute plums for apricots. Last but not least is my fruit tart. A marzipan cream is added to the tart before you add the fruit. This tart is yummy. Again, you can substitute other fruit for the apricots. I added some raspberries I had left over. Instead of inviting your friends for dinner, invite them for tea or Kaffeeklatsch as we call it in Germany. Kaffeeklatsch means to have coffee, something sweet to nibble on and Klatsch, gossiping ...

Apricots are not easy to transport, especially the good ones . I hope you get to have some in the future. They are delicious.

Gerlinde, apricots are so wonderful and seem to have such a short time in which they are readily available. I love a good juicy apricot and what you have presented, the jam, the cake and the tart all look absolutely delicious and a wonderful way to use the fruit. I love coffee cake and want to make your recipe.

Thank you Suzanne, I brought my hair dresser some of the coffee cake and they said it had the texture of velvet.

Apricots, not the replica ones in supermarkets, but real apricots picked sun-warmed from a tree are a special childhood memory for me. Apricots used to be quite common here, in the country where I grew up anyway, but I don't see them so much now. Making jam and adding their flavour to sweets is a wonderful idea.

I just read an article in our local paper that the Blenheim apricots, the best tasting apricot is a disappearing delicacy available for just a few weeks. That's because they have a delicate skin that bruises easily and they can't be shipped.

Your apricot cake looks terrific. I do hope you and your husband have a wonderful time in Paris. I wish I could remember the name of the wonderful Lebanese restaurant that we found on our last trip but the name just won't come to me. Oh well, I know you will make your own wonderful discoveries. Have fun!

So nice to bump into you this afternoon Gerlinde. I grew up in an apricot orchard turned neighborhood in Los Altos. Everyone had at least several apricot trees in their yards. I grew up with them falling and growing acrid, spoiling and sticky on the ground. This speaks of what happens with lack of want. Needless to say, I'm not a fan of the apricot. Your recipes do look amazing though. I have an ex son in law who was born in France. I've messaged him for some good restaurants. I'll get back to you.

I remember buying food from a food truck (yes!) in Paris near the gardens and sitting on a bench and stuffing our faces. It wasn't the best food but it was Paris!

I love apricots too, though I admit I say the same thing about apricots that I do about pears. When they're great, they're great. When they're not, they're not. I love how cooking them turns their already great flavor to something explosive. I would love to try these cakes. I've never cooked with marzipan cream, it's time I tried! Hope the cold is better.

Charlotte, you are so right about the apricots and pears. Sometimes, there is no comparison. By the way I just love Italian food, especially their sweets. I'm still working on my cold, I hope it gets better before I leave.

Ooh, Gerlinde, I am swooning over your apricot coffee cake, looks just like Sunday coffee at Tante Meta! I haven't made an apricot cake in ages and shall rectify this very soon.

To health and happy travels. Feel better. Fly to Paris. Send photos and write about your experiences! I'll live it through you, vicariously. And if I can, I'll try that amazing apricot coffee cake - you say it's easy to make! Is that like Picasso saying it's easy to paint??? :-)

Hi Pam, I'm working on getting better! Cross your fingers. You can make the apricot cake without any problems. Whip the egg white until stiff, cream the butter with sugar and add one egg yolk at a time . Mix until fluffy. When you fold in the whipped egg whites use a spatular, folding in half of the egg whites and then the other. You don't need Picasso's talent to do this. I also have an apricot cobbler recipe on my blog.

You are such a lucky girl, little Paris lady. I am sending some positive thoughts your way that your cold is relieved soon so that you can enjoy picnics in the parks on your trip. I love peaches and I am just starting to see them in the markets here in HK. Of course they have to be imported but making some home made sweet peach jam sounds blissful. Looking forward to you sharing some photos of your trip soon.

Hi Nancy, the apricot jam is very good. I added some roasted pits which gives it a great flavor. The recipe comes from Alice Water's "Fruit" book.
