A German cake that will please your palate

Capitola is about three miles down the road from where I live. It is a cute little seaside village that attracts many visitors from near and far. Each Labor Day there is a Begonia Festival. Local businesses, friends and families decorate floats with begonias and parade them down Soquel Creek under a bridge into a lagoon near the beach. It is a lot of fun and a wonderful Labor Day tradition. The floats are all uniquely beautiful—how can they not be with all those beautiful flowers? This festival has been going on since 1951. Major growers of these tuberous begonias are located in the Santa Cruz area and in late summer they are in spectacular bloom.

Originally, I had planned to post an Italian giant cookie cake. I will do that next. Last Sunday, Ronald, my strawberry farmer, had some beautiful ones and sold me a whole flat: 12 pint baskets of strawberries just picked that morning, sweet and juicy. I had already made strawberry jam from an entire flat the previous week, so I used half of the strawberries to make more jam. We ate quite a few fresh ones and sliced some for my husband’s morning cereal. I had two baskets left. I also had some green rhubarb in my dried out tiny garden. After a quick search on the internet, I found a German recipe I like and this cake was born. It was easy to make and I couldn't stop eating it after it came out of the oven. My husband said it was not his favorite, but he still managed to eat quite a bit. I hope you enjoy this cake as much as I did.

Strawberry-meringue, lovely. Strawberry & rhubarb & meringue - priceless! I am amazed you still have rhubarb, though. California perk, surely. Love the Capitola pictures. N xx

Nicole, our costal area has a mild climate, usual with cool summers and warmer winters. The rhubarb in my garden has been producing very little and the stalks are green. Lets hope we get some rain this year.

My rhubarb stalks are green too! I would very much enjoy a huge slice of your wonderful cake! The classic combination of strawberries and rhubarb sounds scrumptious!

Hi Deb, I think the only variety of rhubarb that grows here is green. My friend's rhubarb is also green.

Gerlinde, I bet the flowers were just gorgeous! And your cake looks mouthwatering.

The begonias are gorgeous and the volunteers for the floats have to pick them which requires backbreaking work. One of the floats this year used 6000 blossoms. Decorating the floats has been known to turn into a party

Oh, Gerlinde, my mouth is watering - and I'm not fond of rhubarb! You may have made a convert out of me, for you have most certainly teased my palate with these photos.
The begonias are lovely. How bit they must get where you are. Ours are doing well here in the midwest this year, but, starting to fade as they anticipate Autumn. I would enjoy your begonia festival.

Penny, the begonias are also starting to fade here. I think you could omit the rhubarb from the cake and it still tastes good.

Oh that's beautiful! What a lovely cake! But those begonia flowers are huge compared to ours! So pretty! Glad to see a culture appreciate these humble flowers!

Begonias used to be grown all over in this area, but now we have shopping centers and houses instead. The growers moved south . There used to be a grower in town that had the most beautiful begonias I have ever seen.

Dear Gerlinde, the begonia festival looks absolutely wonderful - I would go and visit too if Iived nearby - my kind of fest, that´s for sure. And your German strawberry-rhubarb cake with all that delightful meringue on top is calling my name - I certainly would not mind a hefty slice with my afternoon cup of Earl Grey - wonderful pictures too, so very summery! But, alas, rhubarb season is long gone arond here.
Liebe Grüße nach Santa Cruz,
Andrea

Lovely to see celebration of begonias. They are such beautiful rich flower but they don't seem to get much attention... unlike ubiquitous roses!
I love fresh strawberries, am selective about strawberry otherwise but combined with rhubarb and cake... OMG. Yum :)

EllaDee, you would have loved the old nursery where they had the most beautiful begonias. I really enjoy the combination of the tart rhubarb and the sweet strawberries.

Thank you Mary Ann, after having watered the rhubarb in my garden for so long I just wanted to use it. I prefer the red rhubarb.

Thanks for the compliment Maureen, I'm taking a class at the local Junior College in digital photography. I also like the course you posted on Facebook. My rhubarb was green and very tart and it did not make the cake soggy which was a concern to me.
