Fig Mustard

10/23/2018

I really shouldn't do this, instead I should go for a walk to give my old body some exercise before a very long flight. But I just have to share this because fig season is almost over and I love this mustard. Have you noticed that I am running a little behind when it comes to seasonal  cooking? Later on, I will try making this recipe using dried figs and add it here.
Easy homemade fig mustard
The figs in this photo are dried mission figs
It all began with a basket of Italian figs that my girlfriend Diane gave me.
Easy homemade fig mustard
This mustard would be great on a cheese plate or on a turkey sandwich. In France, figs and fig mustard is often served with foie gras, and in Germany it is served with a Weißwurst (veal sausage). This is not a sweet mustard, but it is full of flavor with the taste of the figs and a hint of vinegar.

This looks wonderful! Love the port in it -- that provides such nice depth of flavor, and helps sweeten a pretty tangy recipe. Nice recipe -- thanks.

The port really made the recipe. I had a sip now and then.

A basket of figs is a phrase that paints a pretty picture. This condiment is even more beautiful... GREG

This is a fabulous idea for a cheese board. Sure wish we had a huge basket of figs. They have been really hard to come by near me this year. Where are you off to now? Wishing you a safe and happy flight and excursion. Take Care

Veal sausages are common in Bavaria and Austria with a variety of different mustards. Each region seems to have their own mustard. We are enjoying our trip .

Hi Gerlinde,
I tried to comment from work the other day -- now I see that it didn't work.
I'm fascinated with the thought of fig mustard. I've never heard of it. As always you make it look delicious and sound wonderful.
Wherever you're headed, have a safe and happy journey.
Hugs!

I had never heard of fig mustard either but absolutely love the idea! What a delicious condiment. Now if I could only find some beautiful figs that don't cost a fortune here :)

This mustard is a great for the upcoming holidays. I will pair it with my country pâté. Figs are expensive and I hope to reproduce this recipe with dried figs.

Your lush mustard recipe would indeed be good with a variety of meats and cheeses. I usually make a small batch of fig jam to go with a cheese plate for the holidays. Often it is too sweet, depending on the flavor and ripeness of the figs. This mustard recipe is a great alternative!

Thank you Deb, your fig jam is delicious. I like the word lush and was looking for adjectives like that when I wrote this post. Hopefully , I will have some left when we see each other again.

So glad the figs went to good use! They are very fragile and don’t last more than a few days. I served your mustard last night with a Salcicero country pate while overlooking the Pacific Ocean at sunset! Delicious and satisfying!

I have never heard of fig mustard! And I am a real lover foie gras and Weißwurst! I wonder if Trader Joe has any figs left this season. If he does, I will be making this for sure! I think using dried figs will, indeed, make too sweet.

David, I saw some fresh figs at Whole Foods last week. As soon as I get home I will try this recipe with dried figs using less figs and soaking them in the port for several hours . It’s going to ge an experiment.

What an interesting and fun recipe, Gerlinde! I've definitely never heard of fig mustard, but this would be a wonderful addition to say a turkey sandwich after Thanksgiving. Ooo...I bet it would go well on a cheese board, too! :-)
