Cranberry Ketchup and Cranberry Sauce

11/11/2015

This cranberry ketchup and my simple cranberry sauce are a tasty addition to any meal—and not just for the holidays. Freeze some extra bags of cranberries to make throughout the year.

Life is full of surprises with ups and downs like a roller coaster. One moment you are on top of the world (knowing that it won't last), full of anticipation and fear of the unknown as you contemplate the ride down. Personally, I don't like roller coasters, I prefer a gentle ride on a carousel. Last November and December were such roller coaster months for me.  I had a wonderful visit with my mom in Germany. Afterwards, my husband and I went to Berlin, Prague, and Nürnberg. I came home and got ready for Christmas in the Sierras, baked cookies, tarts, made cranberry ketchup and cranberry sauce. Two days before Christmas, we loaded all our goodies into the car and left for the mountains. As we began our journey, I got messages from my niece saying that my mom had fallen and broken her hip badly. She was in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. On the first summit,  I decided to turn around and go back home to make arrangements to leave for Germany. I was on the plane 24 hours later, and landed in Germany on Christmas Day. By then, my mom had peacefully passed away with my brother's family around her. I am so thankful for their love and care.

Cranberry Ketchup
Last year, while looking through my folders, I came upon a recipe for cranberry ketchup. Since I love cranberries, I decided to make some. It was still in my fridge when I returned  from Germany after my mom’s funeral. It was comforting to put on my sandwiches and added flavor and richness to many meals. I promised myself to make it again. This year, I will be in Germany for Thanksgiving to celebrate my brother's birthday. So, I decided to have a pre-Thanksgiving dinner in the Sierras in our cabin with my sister-in-law and her husband. The late fall here is gorgeous. There are very few people there now and we were expecting a dusting of snow for the weekend.

I made the cranberry ketchup and cranberry sauce several days before we drove up. The ketchup is fantastic and a spoonful will enhance most any meal. It lasts for a long time in the fridge and needs to sit for a couple of days to develops its full flavor.

Cranberry Sauce
Every time I cook a turkey, I make cranberry sauce. Turkey without cranberry sauce is not an option on my table. For many years, I have made the same recipe—not because it is the best or special—but because it is the one my family and I like the best. It is simple and easy to make. I always make it ahead of time and keep it in the fridge. There have been fleeting moments when I thought about adding ginger or a minced jalapeño, but I haven't. Maybe someday I will.
The amount of sugar depends how tart you want it to be: I used ¼ cup this time, but I think I will use ½ cup the next time. The tartness of cranberries has to be balanced with something sweet like orange juice and sugar. All my tasters liked the tartness of the thick sauce.

Oh Gerlinde, I'm so sorry about your mother. I am sure you have wonderful memories and recipes that will always remind you of her. I cannot eat anything chocolate without thinking of my father. It was his favorite! This cranberry sauce and cranberry ketchup looks delicious. I never thought of making cranberry ketchup. I think it would be great on a turkey burger! I can't wait to try! Have a wonderful trip!

Mary Ann, it would be great on turkey burgers . I had it with my leftover turkey because I ran out of cranberry sauce. It's a smooth tasty sauce.

So sorry about your mother, Gerlinde. Yes roller coasters lives are hard … of course the good is great but the sudden comings down hard to bear. I've never got round to making my own cranberry sauce but know other peoples' homemade is great and I love the idea of the ketchup. Now I think this must be the year I buy fresh cranberries and get cooking!

I'm sure they sell fresh cranberries in London, but frozen ones are just as good.

I have never had cranberry ketchup. I just might try this, Gerlinde, as well as your cranberry sauce. I do make a cold cranberry relish, which is a family tradition every year, and usually make it before Thanksgiving and freeze it, dipping into it for Thanksgiving, of course, but, also at other times. Thank you. Just seeing this is tempting my tastebuds for Thanksgiving.

I love to get the recipe for your relish, my mother in law used to make a cranberry relish and it was very good. The cranberry ketchup keeps for weeks in the fridge.

Cranberry ketchup sounds so vibrant! I'm daydreaming of the day after Thanksgiving (when all the cooking is finished!) and how wonderful it would be on a turkey sandwich! I hope this years trip to Germany brings gentler memories.

I 'm a little uneasy about my upcoming visit to Germany. It will be the first time without my mom.

I hope you have a good trip and enjoy seeing your family... even though it might not feel as easy as it was, it's a nice thing for you all to be together.
I will have to look for cranberries, I love cranberry sauce on turkey sandwich, and also with brie or camembert... but it's the bought stuff; homemade would be amazing.

Look in the frozen section for cranberries. It would be interesting to see if they grow cranberries in Australia.

I share your story. I had the same experience with my mother. And I am very sorry for your pain.

A touch of jalapeno in a cranberry sauce and in my wild blackberry puree is a real treat. Drizzle that on Camembert and chase it with a cracker.

Happy cooking!

Thank you Kimberley, my mom was 92 and it was her time. She was ready to go and her horrible hip fracture would have made her life miserable.
Jalapeños would give my cranberry sauce a kick.

These both sound wonderful. I basically plan meals around condiments, so I would definitely put these both to good use!

I would never serve turkey without cranberry sauce, love the stuff. I also think that the ketchup sounds wonderful. I am a fan of cranberries add them to all sorts of foods I prepare. I am so sorry to hear about your Mother, my sincere condolences. I know your trip to Germany will be bittersweet. So difficult losing a loved one any time but around the holidays it's especially difficult. Hard to believe there is snow, but how lovely for a holiday gathering.

I'm with you - I dislike roller coasters. But in life, we don't have a choice. I remember last year and your bumpy ride, but you got through it with grace and love. You are definitely your mother's daughter. I hope you have a smooth ride on this holiday. I look forward to trying out your cranberry sauce!

So very sorry about your mom - I know that was very hard. I lost my mom a long time ago, and my dad too. They missed so much. Love this interesting ketchup - would have never thought about cranberries! Have a lovely weekend.

Hi Gerlinde--I am so intrigued by your cranberry ketchup--I would love to make it this year. Cranberries in some form must be on the Thanksgiving table. I hope that your holidays will be smooth this year.

Good morning Gerlinde,
Yes, I'm late finding these lovely recipes, but followed the trail from your Facebook post today.
(I'm sorry for the very sad circumstances of your mom's passing.)

I love everything cranberry I've ever tried. But I'm having a hard time imagining cranberry ketchup. So -- I must give this a try! I'm sure it's delicious. TGIF and hugs!
