A marmalade that is great on toast, but will also enhance your cooking

I love really love the taste of citrus. One of my favorite snacks is candied orange peel. So it is no surprise that I also love orange marmalade. It is not just ordinary orange marmalade—it is blood orange marmalade, which has a more intensive orange flavor. There are different kinds of blood oranges. This year, I have been buying organic Moro oranges at our local farmers market, which are the most colorful blood oranges of them all. The juice of a Moro orange is rich in anthocyanin, which may help prevent a fatty liver (according to wikipedia). I make this marmalade not only for my  buttered toast, but to use in sauces, fruit compotes, cakes and crepes. However you use it, it adds flavor and richness. I used this marmalade to make the ganache for my chocolate tart.
The recipe comes from a beautiful calendar that a friend sends me every year from Germany. He took over this tradition when my father passed away many years ago. He is so sweet and I appreciate it so much. Thank you,  Ekkerhard Lindner and family.

I use the small, bitter Seville oranges which cannot really be eaten raw; it’s the traditional English recipe. Sometimes I use a mix of oranges and lemons, but I won’t be making any more this year because, unless I give some away, I won’t need more until next January.

I never made orange marmalade in Germany. It’s a relatively new kind of marmalade, there was no marmalade around when I still lived there. Admittedly, that’s many years ago.

I have subscribed to your blog via email.

Thank you Friko! My mother only made marmelade from local fruits. My favorite being Zwetschgenmus ( spelling ?)

I made the Blood Orange Marmalade with oranges from my tree in Corralitos. It was a first pick so the oranges were not yet so dark in color. The result was a lighter colored marmalade. I added a vanilla pod to the pot for a little flavor. I did cook it too long on the stove top because it is a little hard to spread. Still delicious though!

I also made some marmalade from your oranges and I added the vanilla pod you gave me. It’s very nice but different from the marmalade I cooked with other blood oranges. My brother really likes it.

Gerlinde, I love making all kinds of marmalade but have never gotten around to blood orange marmalade. It is soooo pretty! I must try it soon. Very soon.

This marmalade is great for baking because you end up with pieces of caramelized orange grind peel.
